Similar Covers: More Braids

Here are a couple more covers that look very similar: The Dollmaker by Harriette Arnow and Waiting by Ha Jin. It feels unfair to compare them, since the first image is such poor quality, but Waiting definitely has a better cover in my opinion!

Waiting also has another cover, which reminded me of the cover of Backseat Saints by Joshilyn Jackson. What do you think?

If I crop out the braids and blow them up, this is what they look like side by side:

This is the second time I’ve posted about similar covers that feature braids.

  1. Is it weird that all these braids kind of freak me out? Probably.

  2. Seeing Waiting there makes me want to read it! I loved A Free Life by Ha Jin.

  3. You posted several books I want to read especially "Waiting" and "Backseat Saints" although the braid thing creeps me out a little, I'm not sure why. I also find it interesting that even the braid is similar to both books. I guess I always figured the covers of books published at similar times would be very different. Maybe there are too many books for that?!
I love these cover posts of yours!

  5. It's hard to tell if the braids on Waiting and Backseats Saints is the same one. I read Waiting a few years ago and it was the edition with the red cover.

  6. The cover of Backseat Saints is curious to me. Is she holding a severed braid?

  9. I love the first "waiting" cover, it's really mysterious! "Backseat Saints' cover is a bit weird, though.

  10. The Dollmaker was a hit in the 50's! But now it is rather a lost book. I think it should be ressurected. My book club just finished with it.
    It's a great book---highly reccomend it
