Book Fair Week 2009 (part 2)

As I mentioned in part 1 of my Book Fair Week posts, I was in Quebec City this weekend for the Quebec City Women’s Club Book Fair, which took place on Saturday. All their books are $1 each with the exception of a few they consider special books (usually bestsellers in great condition, art books and other coffee table books), which are anywhere from $2 to $10 each. I stayed away from the special books, so this is what I got for $24:

The books are:

My friend Michelle, who gave me a lift to Quebec City (and bought 83 books at the book fair!), gave me two more books:

My best finds are A Short History of Progress (recommended by my sister R.), The Enchanted April (which someone at the book fair said was one of the best books she’d ever read) and Old Books, Rare Friends (which sounds great!).

Have you read any of these books? Are there any you’d recommend (or disrecommend)?

  1. I loved The Namesake. It's the only one I've read from your loot. Have White Teeth on the tbr though, and have heard mixed reviews. But I've also heard The Enchanted April is good. Enjoy!

  4. Wow Avis you got some really good deals and books. Glad you had fun.

I heard that the Doctors Wife is suppose to be good. I did read one book by the author earlier this year.

Also The Girls is suppose to be good.

    Enjoy them all :)

  5. Wow, talk about a bargain! I am blown away at the great stack of books you got for such a reasonable price. I read and thoroughly enjoyed The Doctor's Wife. I've read another one by Laura Lipmman and it was a good mystery as I recall. Enjoy all the books!

  6. I loved both Three Miss Margarets and The Namesake. I tried several times to read White Teeth and just couldn't. Congrats on all your great finds!

  8. All those books and the only one I read was "The Doctor's Wife." It was OK ... not earth-shattering but not awful either.

  10. I made it into your blog - how exciting! (And happy your comment was about books and not about our flat tire adventure!)

Very jealous you found A Short History of Progress, by the way. And The Genius Factory was one of the books I donated - I must say it ranked fairly low on the list of dozen+ popular science/history books I've read in the past year or two.

  11. Wow! Quite the scoop! The only one I've read is The Petty Details of So-and-so's Life...and unfortunately I wasn't that impressed. (I was okay enough with it to try her other book, but it just didn't leave a whole lot with me.) Short History & Old Books sound good!

  12. Wow, what a great looking group of books!
I highly recommend "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith. It's a wonderful book as is her third novel "On Beauty". The Bell Jar is great but troubling and The Namesake is very good.

    Enjoy!

  13. wow wow wow. With all these books, you'll be busy for quite a while. =) A friend reccommended The Bell Jar to me, but what kind of person would I be if I asked to borrow her copy when I have so many unread books around me? I'll need a couple of readathons to finish those books.

For $1 a book, those are really good deals. I hope you'll enjoy all your books! =)
