Teaser Tuesdays (July 7)
Should Be Reading hosts the Teaser Tuesdays weekly event.
My modified rules are as follows:
Grab your current read. Pick two or three “teaser” sentences more or less at random from the book, anywhere on the page. You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your teaser from… that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given! (Please avoid spoilers!) (Read the official Teaser Tuesday rules.)
My teaser:
“Shame. Stigma. Disgrace. How often those words closed a conversation about Annie and mental illness, how quickly they came to the surface when I mentioned to friends or strangers that I was trying to understand why my mother had made her sister’s existence into a secret, and why she had not only kept that secret, but guarded it, nurtured it” (p. 62).
This is from Annie’s Ghosts: A Journey into a Family Secret by Steve Luxenberg.

Interesting quote. Is this fiction or non-fiction?
ReplyDeleteNon-fiction. It's quite an amazing story!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great teaser, Avis. It brings to mind the family secret my family (my grandmother's family in particular) has held onto all these years. Not the same secret as the one described in the quote, but one that carried the burden of stigma and disgrace just the same.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very interesting teaser...and non-fiction, now I'm intrigued!
ReplyDeleteWow great teaser - sounds like a good book!
ReplyDeleteSounds like I would love this book. Great teaser!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a very interesting book - isn't it interesting how people view mental illnesses and other disabilities?

ReplyDeleteTuesdays: Teaser/Whereabouts
Oooh...Very intriguing teaster!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your review.
I read this book a couple of months ago and truly enjoyed it. Your teaser brought back the memories of the book. The author was/is so persistent after the truth that the book was enjoyable from that aspect also. I look forward to your review.
ReplyDeleteSounds interesting, Avis. This memoir reminds me a bit of the fiction story 'Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox'.
ReplyDeleteThat is an excellent teaser. I look forward to your final thoughts on the book.
