Similar Covers: Woman with Necklace

I mentioned last week that I’d found a few familiar-looking covers in the catalogues I picked up at BEA, so here’s another pair: I spotted Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julia Serano (which sounds like a great read) in the Seal Press catalogue and immediately thought of Kissing Games of the World by Sandi Kahn Shelton. Again, although the Shelton book is more familiar to me, it actually came out more recently (it was published in 2008 by Shaye Areheart)—the Serano book was first published in 2007.

There are actually two other books that feature this woman and her necklace on their covers; check them out at Caustic Cover Critic.

  1. You've got a great eye - they look like they were taken at the same photo shoot to me.

  2. Do we really have such little creativity? I am so surprised and saddened by the insane number of shockingly similar covers. And I agree with Kathy: this one looks like the same photo shoot; she just changed shirts.

  3. They look so similar except for the sizes of the photo the differences in the dress. I agree with Kathy, you really have a great eye.

  4. Esh, I agree with all three of you! You really do have a great eye, and this does look like the same girl who changed shirts. Trisha, i agree completely. It's like we've lost all of our creativity!

  5. It's as though it's the same woman and necklace but they've altered the color and saturation of the hues. Good catch...

  6. I love how with a little bit of work in Photoshop they are able to use the same image over and over and over!

  7. They look like the same photo taken just a few seconds apart.

  8. Even though they're almost the same I still like the one on the right the best!!

  9. Wow, you really have an eye for those! But my favorite would be "An accommodating spouse" from the link you gave, the tones are very nice on it!

  13. I usually read these look-alike posts strictly for the photos...but this time I requested "Whipping girl" by inter-library loan, with a subtitle like that it sounds like it's not to be missed!

  14. Wow, somebody just alerted me to this site--and I had never seen the other cover!! I, too, can't believe it! What? Do they just have a room of covers and they go in and pick one out whether they've used it or not? You'd think they'd retire the covers. Definitely the same hands on both of these! (And also I was bothered by the fact that the woman on the cover was NOT the description of the protagonist in the book!) Ah, well...
