Mailbox Monday (May 24)
I received two books in the mail this past week: my sister Brogan sent me a copy of Nobody’s Mother: Life Without Kids edited by Lynne Van Luven (I’m childless by choice), and Harper Collins sent me a limited and signed first edition of The Map of True Places by Brunonia Barry for a group read with The Next Best Book Club on Goodreads. I loved Barry’s first book, The Lace Reader (read my review), so I’m looking forward to reading this one soon. I also bought myself Careless in Red by Elizabeth George to read on the train to New York City, but then started it last week—and I’m nearly half way through! (Luckily it’s a brick, so I still have about 300 pages to go.) I’m glad I’m enjoying it after all the negative things I heard about her previous book, What Came Before He Shot Her (which I own but decided to skip for now).

I want to read all of your books, really, I'm trying to win A Map of True Places. I love the other two too. Enjoy!

Each book sounds good. Have a great time in NYC!
ReplyDeleteI loved Careless in Red. Elizabeth George is one of my favorite authors, but I just couldn't finish What Came Before He Shot Her. It was just too depressing. Maybe you'll have better luck than me!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new books - they sound really good!
ReplyDeleteGreat selection! I have "The Lace Reader" in my TBR pile and hopefully I'll enjoy it so I can read "The Map of True Places", too. Have you read the author's other book?
ReplyDeleteAll 3 sound great and I hope that George's book is still keeping you involved!! Have fun in NYC!
ReplyDeleteA nice batch!
ReplyDeleteHere is my MM list on Rose City Reader.
Enjoy your new books...I have The Map of True Places also, but just haven't read it yet.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't read The Lace Reader so now I am hopelessly behind!
ReplyDeleteNice! I just read the Lace Reader and really liked it, so I'm also craving The Map of True Places :)
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear you are enjoying the Elizabeth George because I had been boycotting her since the unfortunate loss of you know who, yet have this new one ready to give my sister for her bday next week.
ReplyDeleteI have not been brave enough to take the train or bus to Montreal but did drive in February and hope to come again in July and that seemed to take a long time. I may ask you for bookstore recommendations for my next trip.
I'm on page 79 of The Map of True Places and I'm already hooked and not wanting to put it down!
ReplyDeleteTea, I hope you managed to get your hands on The Map of True Places -- it's really good so far!
ReplyDeleteGinny Marie, I don't know when I'll get around to reading WCBHSH -- I keep hearing negative things about it plus as you said, it's such a depressing story...
Kay, are you asking about a book other than The Lace Reader (which I have read, as I mentioned in my post)? Barry hasn't written any other books, has she?
CLM, I know what you mean (about boycotting EG's books). I was kinda doing that too, but then gave in and bought Careless in Red. Driving to Montreal in February sounds pretty brave to me! Please feel free to get in touch with me for bookstore recommendations if you come this way again!
