New Blog Design: A Work in Progress

I was up late last night and decided to take the plunge: using the Blogger Template Designer (thanks, Callista, for pointing out its existence), I gave my blog a new look! What do you think? I’m not sure I like where some of my widgets have wound up (but check out my new user pic—I want you all to be able to recognize me at BEA and Book Blogger Con!) and there are a few that obviously still need some adjustment. For example, does anyone know how to fix the “Subscribe by email” box? I also want to change my Subscribe button, but don’t know how...

Do you have any suggestions? Things you like, things you hate? Please let me know!

Edited to add:
Many thanks to Linda at Better with Books for helping me fix my “Subscribe by email” box and my Subscribe button!

  1. So will we recognize you at BEA by the cat on your shoulder? ;)

  2. I was thinking the same thing as Lenore - you're going to have to bring your cat to BEA!

  3. I like your profile pic! Your blog seems to scroll through slowly on my computer -- I can't remember whether it did before or not. Also maybe a darker font color rather than white in the blog header? I like the pencils at the top and the "bookcases" surrounding your blog!

  5. I really like the new look. It's clean, easy to find stuff, and I love the books that frame everything!

  6. Your blog looks great! But like Valerie said, it also scrolls very slowly on my comp (and it took a while to load as well). But the look is fresh and nice and I really like it. Unfortunately, I am not going to BEA, so will not see you, whether you bring your cat or not :-(

  7. I definitely like the new look! The colors are soft and make for easy reading on the eyes. This is important when we read lots of stuff on the Net!

  10. After reading some of the previous comments, I closed your blog and re-opened it several times to see how quickly it would load. On my computer it didn't take any time at all.

  11. Good for you redesigning! And adding your own face to your profile pic. :) The blog scrolls a bit slowly for me too...maybe due to the background? I'm just glad you have a search box that's easy to find!

  13. I like how the background template brings out the colors in your header. Everything is easy to find and the page loaded much faster than it normally does. I'd say it was a success!

I won't be going to BEA but as the others have said here, you need to bring the cat for everyone to recognize you since it's covering a good portion of your lovely face!

  14. It looks great! Glad to be of help. I think the template designer is a great idea, they just need to add lots more templates.

Sadly I'm not going to BEA as I can't afford it but have fun!

  15. Lenore and Kathy, although she loves to be carried everywhere (and would be happy in my arms almost all day long -- she's on my lap as I type this), I don't think Cairo would enjoy NYC!

Valerie, I'm not happy to hear it's scrolling slowly for you! I'm afraid it might be the background image that's the culprit. As for the white title, I'm still undecided. I keep trying other colours and going back to the white...

    Yay, thanks, Nathalie and Kathleen!

Waah, Louise, I'm worried about this slow scrolling business! I know there's a site that tests the loading time for each element on a website, but I can't remember what it's called.

Laura, I totally agree! I have trouble reading sites that use a white font on a dark background or that are too flashy.

Thanks, Jenners! I figured it would at least give folks an idea of what I look like, even if I'm still hiding a bit behind Cairo!

Thanks, Donna! Good to know that it works for you!

Eva, I'm still working on that search box (it's way too small), but that's one of my pet peeves: not being able to find things easily on other blogs!

    Thanks, Diane and spacemaurader!

Whoo-hoo, Ti, faster is good! Yeah, I was really pleased to find that background image, as I also thought it worked really well with my header.

    Thanks, Nicole and Melissa!

  16. Callista, I noticed your comment just as I was posting my last reply. Thank you so much for that tip; I've been wanting to update my blog's look for the longest time and that was pretty darn easy!

  17. My cats would freak in NYC too. They freak on the street in front of our building!

  18. I love your new look! Especially the header.

  19. Lenore, I wish sometimes that I could go for walks with Cairo, but Montreal is too scary for her too. (My mum's cat walks with her occasionally, but she lives in small-town Nova Scotia.)

    Thanks, Teddy Rose!
