Library Loot (January 7)

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Eva at A Striped Armchair and Marg at Reading Adventures that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post—feel free to steal the button—and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries! Want to share your loot? Eva has the Mr. Linky this week!

I’m super excited about my library loot this week because I got my very first two interlibrary loan books: Janes in Love by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg (the follow-up to The Plain Janes, which I’ve borrowed and read twice now) and Stitches: A Memoir by David Small. (It was Kathy’s review at Bermudaonion’s Weblog that convinced me I wanted to read this one.) My local library doesn’t have the greatest selection of English books (I’m in Quebec after all), so interlibrary loans open up a lot more options for me.

The weird part about the ILL process was that I requested the books online in mid-December and no one called to tell me they had arrived. When I checked my file online yesterday, I realized that one of the ILL books was due on January 12 (in less than a week!) and the other on January 17, so they must have arrived at my library. The folks at the library were initially not very helpful—their reaction was: “Did anyone call you? No? Then we probably don’t have your books.” Luckily, I had printed out the page from the site that indicated the due dates, which inspired one woman to finally go and check!

I also borrowed another YA book, Empress of the World by Sara Ryan, inspired by Bronwyn’s review at A Certain Bent Appeal. It turns out Ryan also writes comic books, which can be read at ComicSpace.

  1. How odd! My ILLs show up as available with my other holds, and my library just switched systems so now I can log in to my ILL account and stalk my requests, lol.

At least graphic novels are usually pretty quick reads! I enjoyed Plain Janes when I read it last year, and I just read another graphic novel (Emiko Superstar) that really reminded me of it. I wish my library had the sequel; maybe I"ll end up ILLing it too!

  4. I don't think our library does inter library loans in England. I will have to check that . I want to read Stitches too. I hope you manage to read your books in time before you have to get them back.

  6. Eva, when I went to the main checkout counter to ask about my ILLs, they said, "We don't deal with those!" as if I'd requested something really strange. Turns out I had to go to what she called the "reception desk" to get the books. I really want to read Emiko Superstar too!

Kathy, no pressure! I won't hold it against you if I don't enjoy it (and I'm pretty sure I will).

Linda, I devoured Janes in Love last night and although I enjoyed the first one more, this one is totally worth reading too.

Vivienne, I didn't think Quebec did interlibrary loans either, so I was pleasantly surprised to see they do.

Staci, I'll keep an eye out for your review!

Hopefully, I'll make it to the library this weekend. I've got a couple of holds to pick up!

  12. I got my first ILL recently as well, although mine was handled like a regular hold. Just no renewals possible, so I made sure it started at the top. Enjoy your finds!

  13. Oh that's not fun! Make sure you get the ILL's back on time or they won't let you use the system again. Happy reading!

  14. Saveophelia and Iliana, I hope to write my review soon. (I can tell you that I recommend the book!)

Tiina, I noticed you posted your review. I must admit I haven't even started the book yet!

    Thanks, Marg, Wisteria and Cat!

Beth, yeah, mine were non-renewable too, which was a bit of a bummer since I had them for such a short time. I did manage to read both though.

Ladytink, thank you so much for telling me that; I made a point of returning them both on time! (I unfortunately often return my library books late.)
