Similar Covers: Flying Book

Doesn’t the book on the three covers below look like it’s flying? Hopefully not in a thrown-across-the-room kinda way, though... Anyway, these three books are: Scribner’s Best of the Fiction Workshops 1998 edited by Carol Shields (1998*), A Writer’s Book of Days: A Spirited Companion and Lively Muse for the Writing Life by Judy Reeves (1999) and The Muse Asylum by David Czuchlewski (2002). Of the three, I think my favourite is Reeves’ book (although the wiggly subtitle in yellow is a bit weird)—and it’s also the one I’m most interested in reading.

  3. Stephenie, that's a picture of what happens when the ending of a book ticks me off =o)

I don't love this image... but I think it's interesting that it's been used on so many covers.

  4. The Reeves cover is my favorite, but the Czuchlewski-book sounds more like something I would like.

  5. Seriously--is there a shortage of available artwork for book covers? Why do they use the same shots over and over?

  6. The last one is a little weird; looks like a man with a book head! My favorite is Reeves one, too.

  7. Lol! I certainly hope that this book wasn't a 'wall-banger' while the picture was taken :)

  8. The cover for my 1994 book, Circle of Light, written as Nancy Cane for Kensington, is repeated in Janeen O'Kerry's book titled Sister of the Moon in 2001.

  9. That's definitely the same picture. I never realized how often they used the same picture before.

  10. I like the middle cover the best too - The Muse Asylum's cover looks too faded and the first cover's writing is too large, but I do like the colour on it. Great post!

  11. This is the first one of these posts where I've actually wanted to read all 3 books!!!

  12. OMG! I can't believe there are more of these.

The "thrown-across-the-room kinda way" ... lol, made me chuckle.

I think the middle one sounds like the most interesting one too, and yeah, the yellow subtitle is weird. I don't get why it's curved in that way.

  13. Some pictures are vague enough that publishers can tweak them once and that will essentially lead to a sneaky "second cover". This photo is so distinct (with the flying pages and everything) that it's slightly embarrassing that the publishers thought they could get away with it.
