Friday Finds (March 6)
What great books have you added to your wish list this week? Share your Friday Finds at Should Be Reading.
I’m highlighted two very different books this week...
St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves is a collection of short stories by Karen Russell, which I discovered on Aerin’s blog, In Search of Giants. Aerin says: “These stories may be surreal, but what’s far more astonishing is Russell’s magic with words. Russell unabashedly expects the best of the English language and refuses to settle for less. Her phrasing is orgasmic.” Head over to her blog to read the rest of her review.
S. Krishna at S. Krishna’s Books concludes her review of First Darling of the Morning: Selected Memories of an Indian Childhood by Thrity Umrigar by saying: “Between the poignancy of the stories and the gravitas and beauty of Umrigar’s writing, First Darling of the Morning is a gem that is absolutely not to be missed. I can’t recommend it highly enough.” Sounds good to me!

First Darling of the Morning caught my eye too.
ReplyDeleteFirst Darling of the Morning looks good. I haven't really found much since I have been unpacking
ReplyDeleteThanks for including me in your post! I really loved First Darling of the Morning, if you can't tell by my gushing review!
ReplyDeleteFirst Darling sounds like it would be really good. I read S. Krishna's review too and it was really good.
ReplyDeleteFirst Darling sounds wonderful. I'm definitely going to have to pick it up! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm always surprised and a little apprehensive when people use the term "orgasmic" in regards to literature... I haven't heard of the book, but I'm a fan of short stories and a surreal read sounds pretty good right about now.
ReplyDeleteI have First Darling of the Morning and of course need to read it. I'm pretty sure mine has a different cover than the one posted here though.
ReplyDeleteOh my, that second one looks so good!
ReplyDeleteI've got a friend who's got "St. Lucy's..." on his bookshelf and every time I see it, I want to steal it and read it just based on the title alone.
ReplyDeleteThe Umrigar book is tempting to me - I really enjoyed the author's novel, The Space Between Us.
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone, for your comments! And yup, Swapna, I could tell you really loved First Darling! I'm going to keep an eye out for Umrigar's books in general, so thanks again for the great review.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous Child, I know what you mean, it can seem a little over the top, but I really liked the quotes Aerin picked from this book, so hopefully it will live up to her review!
I agree, Fyrefly, it's such a great title (and the cover grabbed me too)!
