Teaser Tuesdays (February 3)

Should Be Reading hosts the Teaser Tuesdays weekly event.

My modified rules are as follows:

Grab your current read. Pick two or three “teaser” sentences more or less at random from the book, anywhere on the page. You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your teaser from… that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given! (Please avoid spoilers!) (Read the official Teaser Tuesday rules.)

My first teaser:

“‘Fathers and Mothers,’ the Prophet bellows over the noise of fussy babies, ‘from the time your daughter can crawl, you must teach her that she does not belong to you but to the Prophet and the man the Prophet will assign her to in marriage. Only these men, and I mean men, not boys, can take your daughters to the highest degree of the celestial kingdom where they will be queens and priestesses’” (p. 33).

This is from Sister Wife by Shelley Hrdlitschka.

My second teaser:

“There’d be time enough for the holocaust later, and I doubted that seeing Anne Frank’s magazine clippings would do much to enhance my understanding of the period. It had always bothered me that the deaths of eleven million never seemed to affect people the way the death of this girl had, but the other travelers in my hotel encouraged me to go, and what else was I doing? So I got in line outside the quirky building where the world’s most famous holocaust victim had spent much of the war” (p. 52).

This is from The Pages in Between: A Holocaust Legacy of Two Families, One Home by Erin Einhorn.

  1. I think I'd be more inclined to read the book the 2nd teaser comes from. Don't think I could stomach much of the first one...

  4. You should do a monthly round up.. I was behind on my reviewing last year as well but somehow having to write that monthly round up post makes you finish most of the reviews by the first week of the next month.. give it a shot!:)

google analytics is so much fun.. you should get yourself more acquainted with it.. i love seeing where my visitors are from!

  5. Both are wonderful teasers - the first reminds me a little of The 19th Wife, which I loved.

  6. Great teasers Avis. Sister Wife sounds intriguing and I've wanted to read The Pages in Between for ages. I look forward to your reviews.

  7. Wanda, the quote from Sister Wife actually gives the impression this book is heavier than it is.

    Thanks for stopping by, Jo-Jo!

Thanks, Margot. I hadn't really thought about how heavy both of these quotes are!

I think I will, Ramya. Thanks for the encouragement! I agree that Google Analytics is fun. (I had no idea I could check which cities my readers are in, for example!)

Yeah, you're right, Nise, and the funny thing is I hadn't thought of it until you and Margot mentioned it. As I said to Wanda, the first one is lighter than it seems from that quote. (It's a YA book.)

Yeah, I feel like I'm on a bit of a polygamy kick these days, Wendi, between watching Big Love and reading The 19th Wife, Sister Wife and hopefully soon Effigy by Alissa York...

Thanks, Dar! I'm still behind on my reviews, but I will get them up eventually!

  9. I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far, Melissa! I kinda regret picking such a dark quote from it, because the book is not that dark (given its subject matter).

  10. Or maybe I should have said, it's not depressing...

  11. Oh my! This is the first I'd read about Sister Wife. It went directly onto my TBR list, and I'll put it on hold at the library as soon as I get through these 273843298473 books that I have right now! Thank you, that sounds so, so good. :)
