Same cover image!

I finally found two books that use the exact same image on their covers! The first is a French translation of Evening by Susan Minot—I was actually searching for this book on LibraryThing because I thought I’d found another book with a similar cover to the English one (turns out I was wrong) when I noticed this cover, which looked awfully familiar. It took me a while to recall the name of the book (all I could think was Canadian woman writer, someone I haven’t read yet...), but I finally figured it out: Small Change by Elizabeth Hay.

  1. You're amazing! My memory's not that good.

  2. Kathy, I didn't actually remember that it was the same image, just that they were similar. I was surprised they'd used the exact same image! (I must say I like the English cover better!)

  3. Lol. I love that people are paying more attention to book covers lately and while a lot lot of them look similar, there are very few that are the same!

  4. Heh. JR Ward's next release, Lover Avenged, originally had the same cover photo as The Mark of the Horse Lord by Rosemary Sutcliff, and I seem to recall seeing a post about a third book.

Ward's publisher re-shot the cover, but I have to say the difference is hardly noticeable. In fact, I'm not convinced it's actually a different shot; it looks like they just cropped it a little differently.

  6. I enjoy these posts. I'd never figure this stuff out on my own. Heck, I'm lucky I can remember how to get home most days, never mind remember book covers!

  7. Very interesting. The covers are kind of different from each other (shadings), but it's rare to have a non-famous-painting cover have a partner. It's impressive that you saw this and remembered. Quite cool.

  8. Serena, as I said to Kathy, I didn't expect these two covers to be that similar! I just remembered that the second one was a woman in a bathing cap too.

Ladytink, it's actually surprising how many do use the same image (or part of the same image)! I haven't found that many (this was my first) but other folks have.

Nicola, thanks for pointing that duo out! I didn't find a post about the third book, but I did find one about the two you mentioned here.

Shana, it's funny, but I really don't like the French one that much. I think it's the green, but also the fact that the picture bleeds off the cover (there's no borders on it, as there is at the top and bottom in English). It makes the book seem bleak, which the English covers (for Evening I mean) don't do nearly as much. (I haven't read the book, so I don't know if it's bleak or not.)

Anna, I feel like I can relate and I work at home! (OK, so I'm in no danger of getting lost on the way home, but I am incredibly geographically challenged.)

Thanks, Anonymous Child. As I've mentioned before, this has become a bit of an obsession!
