Mailbox Monday (February 23)

What did you find in your mailbox this past week? For other Mailbox Monday posts, head over to Marcia’s blog, The Printed Page.

I ordered two books from Amazon (I was finally getting around to spending the $25 my dad gave me for the holidays plus a bit more):

A Troubled Guest: Life and Death Stories by Nancy Mairs
Bottle Rocket Hearts by Zoe Whittall

I also received two books I won in giveaways:

Good Dog. Stay. by Anna Quindlen (from Stacy at Book Psmith)
The Sinner’s Guide to Confession by Phyllis Schieber (from Julie at Booking Mama and the author)

Finally, I received a book for review:

The Local News by Miriam Gershow (from Spiegel & Grau, a division of Random House)

I also got together with my local blogger group yesterday (Cindy of Cindy’s Love of Books, Donna of BookBound and Tina of Bookshipper) to chat and exchange books. I scored seven more books (of which four are part of series!):

The Good Body by Eve Ensler
The Debs by Susan McBride
The Birth House by Ami McKay
The Crazy School by Cornelia Read
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
Embracing the Wide Sky: A Tour Across the Horizons of the Mind by Daniel Tammet
Pardonable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear

Apologies for the not-so-great book pile picture. For a photo of two of the four members of our modestly named Book Bloggers Association of Montreal (BBAM), check out Cindy’s post.

  1. You got some wonderful books! I'm getting jealous, so many people have posted that they received The Local News. My copy hasn't arrived yet. How cool that you can get together with local bloggers and exchange books!! How fun. I have The Birth House on my TBR shelf.

  6. I have a few on your list in my TBR, but I think the only one I've read is Good Dog. Stay. It was a very quick read, but good!

  7. You hit the motherload!! Oh, and how do you manage to wait so long to spend a giftcard...I have no will-power and spend mine as fast as my fingers can type!

  8. I must say that "Bottle Rocket Hearts" looks quite ---hmmmm-- provacative!

And I've been so disappointed in Anna Quindlen lately ... I've pretty much given up on her altogther.

You certainly made out like a bandit this week! I'm sure this haul will take you a while!

  10. No way I'm reading Anna Quindlen again. She about broke my heart with Black and Blue. Great haul of books though!

  11. Good for you (but I am still jealous!) I think I will start doing "Mailbox Monday" on BOOKIN' WITH BINGO but it might depress me! So many great books! WOW!How exciting for you...thanks for sharing!

  12. Thanks, Bonnie! I hope your copy of The Local News comes soon. I was surprised to receive mine since I requested it back in November. I've been wanting to read The Birth House for a long time, so I was delighted when Myckyee offered it up for grabs (and I snatched it up pretty quickly!).

Kaye, I actually knew Zoe over a decade ago, before she became a published author, so I'm really curious about her novel!

Kathy, I'll give that some thought... I'm still feeling shy about posting my picture online.

    Thanks again, Cindy!

Mo, I grabbed that one on impulse, knowing nothing about the author or the book, so I'm glad to hear you've heard good things about it.

    Thanks for the recommendation, Melissa!

Yeah, it was kinda unlike me not to spend that money sooner, Amy, but I was trying to be good (i.e. not order heaps of books more than I could buy for $25), which meant some serious deliberation about which books to purchase. (My wish list is hundreds of books long!)

Jenners, can I ask why you've given up on Anna Quindlen? Granted, I didn't like the last novel of hers I read (Blessings) nearly as much as her first two, but it was OK (not bad enough to give up on her yet). Did you not enjoy her latest novel, Rise and Shine? Or is she just not your cup of tea? I haven't read any of her non-fiction yet.

Callista, I found other local bloggers through LibraryThing. You might be able to as well? It's been super fun to hang out with other similarly book-obsessed folks! (Plus there's the added bonus of exchanging books!)

Ladytink, I have Black and Blue, but I don't dare read it for that very reason. (Or maybe I actually gave it away because I couldn't bring myself to read it.) Hopefully this book won't be heartbreaking...

Bingo, do join in! I don't post every week (some weeks I don't get any books). This is an exceptional haul for me, in fact, maybe my biggest yet.

  13. What a great week! I'm looking forward to *The Local News* too.

How often do you and BBAM get together? I bet that's a fun gathering!

a p.s. on your note to Jenners ... I've read one collection of essays, *Loud and Clear*, in addition to several of her novels. I like her writing style in Loud and Clear, but I felt the themes were repetitive after a while ... I could almost predict what she had to say (and how she'd say it) about a topic.

  14. Boy, that's a lot of books! Can't wait for your thoughts on The Sinner's Guide. Happy reading!

    Happy Reading!

  17. Dawn, we get together once a month, which is super fun. It does mean that my TBR pile is increasing at an even faster rate than before though! (I always manage to take home more books than I'm giving away.) I'm sorry to hear you found Quindlen's essays a tad repetitive and predictable. The book I've got is short, so hopefully she won't have time to repeat herself!

Thanks, Anna. I actually just got her other book, Willing Spirits for a blog tour, so I'll be reading that one first.

It is quite a provocative cover, Serena! I think the storyline will be too...

I know, Mari, I was quite surprised! I'd given up on receiving the Gershow book, actually, and wasn't expecting the giveaway books to show up so soon.
