Mailbox Monday (January 5)

I’m back! I haven’t posted a Mailbox Monday post in three weeks, so not all of these books were received in the past week...

First, I bought myself a whole box of books for the holidays... (I couldn’t resist the specials offered by BookCloseouts.) This is what the pile looks like (sorry it’s not a better picture):

The books are:

I also got a surprise in the mail just before Christmas: I received an ARC of Jennie Nash’s latest book, The Only True Genius in the Family, which will be released in February. Thanks, Jennie!

Finally, I received a copy of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County by Tiffany Baker today from Hachette. (Thank you!)

What did you find in your mailbox this past week? For other Mailbox Monday posts, head over to Marcia’s blog, The Printed Page.

  1. It's the box of books! Yay! I have Mortification but haven't read it yet!

  2. What a great haul of books. Can't wait to see what you think of Danish Girl.

  3. Wow! I'm going to check out Book Closeouts now...

  4. Now I just need to figure out how to take as good a book pile picture as you take, Alea!

Thanks, Kathy, I'm planning to read that one this year before the movie comes out. (Oh I just checked and the movie's not out until 2010. Well, I'm still planning on reading the book sometime this year!)

Myckyee, they don't have the same special at the moment, but they have another one that looks good too. Keep in mind that these are bargain books, so most of them have black marks on the edges of the pages (which is fine by me but might bug you); unfortunately, a few of the books I ordered were damaged (bent covers, which I hate). But since this whole box only cost me $35 plus tax, I'm not complaining!

  5. Hehe, that's pretty much how I do it, but then I take out the background in photoshop :) Cause where i take the pictures is usually my bed, no one needs to see my messy room!

  6. I did wonder how you did that (removing the background). I'm hopeless with Photoshop, though; is it hard to do? I'm also not happy that the books aren't straight and the top one is really hard to read. But I gave up on taking more pictures when my camera batteries died for the third time today!

  7. It take a bit of practice but it's not too hard. The trick is to zoom in like 500 percent and trace, so then when you zoom out your mistakes are almost invisible!

  8. Thanks Avis - I saw the January promotion at book closeouts.

I like your book pile photo btw - I can see what the top book is, but perhaps it's because I recognize it since I've got a copy.

  9. Oooh, Slammerkin! I loved that!

  10. Wow - you've received some great books! I keep meaning to check out that BookCloseouts site. . . Here's my Mailbox!

  11. Wow, what a haul. I loved Orpheus Lost, I can't wait to see what you think of it. I own Five Quarters of the Orange so I have that to look forward to. I requested a copy of The Little Giant soooo long ago and one never came. Maybe there's hope if you're just getting one now in Canada. I notice it sometimes takes longer for Arcs to be sent here. The Book of Dead Birds sounds intertesting. Happy reading in 2009. My MM is posted.

  12. This is why I love mailbox monday...it's good not to be alone :P

  13. That's quite the haul! Mailbox Mondays are great. They remind me that I am not the only book addict around. We sould all book a room at Betty Ford. LOL!

  14. Alea, I'll have to try that next time! (Or I may take this picture over at some point.)

Myckyee, you'll have to let me know if you decide to order from them. (We could even combine an order at some point, if that was to our advantage... Dangerous thought!) It's not so much that you can't read the name of the first book, just that it looks really out of focus...

Tara, I really wanted to order Donoghue's latest book, but they didn't have it. And someone else (Luanne maybe?) had said Slammerkin was her favourite. Glad to hear you loved it too!

Wendi, as I said to Myckyee, you can't go wrong for the price, but be prepared for some bent covers.

Sandra, Janette Turner Hospital is one of my all-time favourite authors--I've loved everything she's written except Oyster, which I should probably reread--so I was surprised to see she had a new book out I'd never heard of. Have you read her other novels? I hope you get a copy of The Little Giant; from the little I've read so far, it sounds like it's going to be really good.

Nymeth, I agree! My partner also thought it was kinda weird of me to buy myself books for the holidays, but hey, I knew that if I didn't buy them, I wouldn't get any for Christmas, so what to do? (And I was right, he didn't buy me any...)

  15. Teddy Rose, I agree (about the addict part, anyway)! I'm in awe at how many books some folks get every week. (This was an exceptional haul for me because of the holidays and my three-week hiatus; I usually only get a couple of books at most in a given week.)

  16. Avis - I am very tempted to order from them - I've already seen a few books I'm interested in. Is there an advantage on shipping if we double up?

  17. Wow! What a great bunch of books. I heard about Slammerkin somewhere but can't remember where. And I was immediately drawn to Morification...that sounds right up my alley. I think I'll have to check it out.

Thanks for visiting my Mailbox Monday. I'll be back to see more of your stuff!

  18. I love bookcloseouts too! I don't mind the black marks so much because they're such a bargain. What irks me more are also the bent covers (like you). But, hey, for 35 bucks, what a haul! :)

  19. I haven't shopped BookCloseouts ... sounds like it could be habit-forming!

I want to read Ebershoff's two books that you bought (I really enjoyed *The 19th Wife*, and find the author a pleasure to correspond/talk with).

    My Mailbox Monday is here.

  20. Thank you for stopping by the 'mailbox' this week. Gosh I just love posting MM around the holidays because everyone is getting such wonderful books. Enjoy yours!

  21. You got some great books. I ordered from Bookcloseouts for the first time last year when they had that half price sale on fiction. I got And Only To Deceive as well. My pile will be on display in the next Mailbox Monday. :)

  22. Myckyee, sorry it's taken me so long to reply to you! I'm not sure there is an advantage to doubling up at the moment, but if they ever have free shipping for over a certain $ value of books, it might be worth it. I actually found it surprisingly hard to find enough books to order for $35 or more (since they were all so cheap!).

Thanks, Jenners! It's fun to discover new blogs through weekly memes like this one!

Claire, yeah exactly. I don't care about marks but bunged books really bug me. However, only 4 out of 14 were damaged, so that's not too bad.

Dawn, yup I found the same thing (about David and The 19th Wife). I'm really looking forward to the movie version of The Danish Girl.

    Thanks, Marcia!

Wow, OK, I know it's taken me too long to reply to my comments, tanabata, because I've already seen your "next week's" MM post! We'll have to compare notes on the Tasha Alexander book!
