Friday Finds (November 14)

What great books have you discovered this week? Share your Friday Finds at Should Be Reading.

Toby-O Forever mentioned Mary Modern by Camille DeAngelis in his Friday Finds last week, so I went on a hunt for a review of this book. I found a fantastic review at Stainless Steel Droppings. Can you imagine cloning your grandmother? I love the cover too!

Serena at Savvy Verse & Wit reviewed The House on Tradd Street by Karen White. Apparently it’s “part romance, part ghost story, part mystery.” Sounds good to me. You can also read a guest post by the author on Serena’s blog.

The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond has actually been on my wish list for a while now because I’m convinced I’m going to love this author’s work despite the fact that so far I’ve only read one chapter of her latest book, No One You Know. (Was that totally confusing?) Wendy’s review on her blog caribousmom only strengthens my conviction.

As I’ve said before, I’m always on the lookout for a new mystery series and The Serpent and the Scorpion by Clare Langley-Hawthorne sounds right up my alley. You can read a review of this book on Danielle’s blog, A Work in Progress.

Finally, I can’t believe I’d never heard of Emma Donoghue until very recently. She’s written six novels! And she’s Canadian! Her latest is The Sealed Letter, which sounds fantastic and is one of the books featured in The Savvy Reader’s Fabulous Fall Reading Challenge, which runs until December 31. Luanne at A Bookworm’s World reviewed the book.

  1. I want to read The Year of Fog. Have you entered the contests for it? I have.

  2. Serena's review makes me want to read The House on Tradd Street, too.

  3. thanks for posting my contest and review information. I just loved The House on Tradd Street.

  4. Callista, are there other contests for it? I entered Wendy's contest, of course, but am I missing out on others?

Kathy, I had reservations about the romance aspect of this book, but Serena definitely made it sound worth reading!

You're welcome, Serena! I'd love to win a copy of this book. Which reminds me that I must post a comment on the author's guest post!

  5. Thanks for the link to my review of The Sealed Letter. The first one I read of Donoghue's was Slammerkin - it's still my favourite.

  6. Thanks for the link to my review and giveaway :)

  7. Mary Modern looks very intriguing! Onto the tbr list it goes!

  8. I've heard about The Year of Fog but never really paid attention. Maybe I should take a closer look at it.

  9. Great list, Avis!

Mary Modern has been on my wish list since I read a review in BookPage.

  10. I loved both of Michelle Richmond's books...interested to read your thoughts.

My review of No One You Know is here:

  11. Luanne, I'll keep an eye out for that one as well. Many of her books sounds interesting.

    You're welcome, Wendy!

Ah, that ever-expanding, never-ending TBR list! Thanks for stopping by, Kim; I'll pop by your blog next!

Is it just me or do you ever get the feeling you're really going to love an author just based on reading blurbs/reviews of their books and maybe stuff about the author? I really feel that way about Michelle Richmond, Betty. I just hope I'm right!

Shana, I'd never heard of Mary Modern until last week, but the idea behind the book is so intriguing. (And Stainless Steel Droppings makes it sound like a fantastic read.)

Thanks, Jill. I will definitely read your review once I've read the book!

  12. I really want to read The House on Tradd Street too.

  13. I'm disappointed I didn't win a copy from Serena!
