Teaser Tuesdays (September 9)

Should Be Reading hosts the Teaser Tuesdays weekly event.

My modified rules are as follows:

Grab your current read. Pick two or three “teaser” sentences more or less at random from the book, anywhere on the page. You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your teaser from… that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given! (Please avoid spoilers!) (Read the official Teaser Tuesday rules.)

My first teaser:

“Someone once explained to me that this sort of thing is all due to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which requires that everything shall tend towards Chaos. One cannot struggle for ever against the laws of physics: I began to think it might be best, however compulsory the excursion, to return to bed and read the Finance Act, very quietly, until someone came and told me what to do. Someone, in the end, usually does” (p. 55).

This is from Thus Was Adonis Murdered by Sarah Caudwell, which I just finished reading this week.

My second teaser:

“I didn’t say any of these things, just, ‘good to see you,’ as I waved goodbye. And that was that. Or so I thought until he called a few weeks later, and I mistook him for the exterminator” (p. 123).

This is from The Late Bloomer’s Revolution: A Memoir by Amy Cohen.

  1. Great teasers, the first one is very interesting, I have the Late Bloomers on hold at the library - it sounds good!

  2. I adore Sarah Caudwell. She only wrote three mysteries -- wah! -- but her writing was so dry and witty. Just wonderful stuff.

Thanks for stopping by Shelf Love!

  3. Wah is right! I'm sad she wrote so few, although it would appear there are actually four, not three. (The last one was published in 2000, the year she died, according to Wikipedia.) I'm definitely on the lookout for the other three!

  4. I have never heard of Sarah Caudwell - it's so much fun finding out about new authors!

I like the second quote. The part about the exterminator made me laugh! I have heard about the Late Bloomers book, but haven't read any reviews yet.
