Really Random Tuesday: I’m Back...

Hello my lovelies, how are things? It feels like I’ve been away forever (and it has been about a month since I went on vacation!). What have I missed? I marked all 1000+ posts in my Google Reader as read (something I normally never do), so let me know which of your posts I need to read, please!

In other news, you may have noticed that I’ve tweaked my blog layout a bit. I liked the book background, but too many other folks used it, so for now I’m going with plain orange. What do you think? I want to reorganize the columns too, but that seems more daunting... I also made the whole blog wider—is that a problem for any of you?

Finally, Mr. B has offered to buy me an e-reader! (He’s hoping that will curb the influx of books into the house.) I know many of you have one (and some of you have even written posts about them)—what are your recommendations? Thank you in advance!

  1. Welcome back! I will link to this RRT post. I like the new look of your blog; it's clean and easy on the eyes. I don't have an eReader, but I would get either a Kindle or a Nook.

  2. I have a Kindle and have been really pleased with it. It has its irritating quirks and it is not the same as having a real book, but it is easy on my eyes and much easier for reading while traveling.

  3. I like the new look too, especially that it's wider. (I think subliminally I suspect those with a narrower look of narrower views.)

I have a Kindle. It's great for travel, but the bookmark function isn't easy or convenient enough for me yet (I've only had it since July) to make reading on it a habit at home.

  4. I like the new look - I'm a fan of a clean, easy to read format and yours is! I recommend going to a Best Buy or similar store to compare the various eReaders. Each has its pros and cons so I think it comes down to personal preference.

  5. I love the new look! I've heard the new, stripped down nook is the best dedicated eReader, but I've never used one, so I can't say for sure. I have a Kindle, a Sony Pocket eReader and an iPad and I prefer the iPad. Don't tell your hubby, but it won't stop the books from coming into your house.

  6. I love the new look. It is crisp and clean! I looked at both the Nook and Kindle when I was looking at e-readers. I got mine as a X-mas gift from hubby and he couldn't get the Kindle in time for the holiday so he bought the Nook. I am very happy with it but I have a friend who has the Kindle and she loves hers as well. I think both are very good. I am not much help, am I? I did go to Best Buy and played around with both of them.

  7. I wouldn't recommend the Nook, because BN won't sell books out of the US. Amazon (Kindle) does sell internationally, but I've heard that their Canadian selection is limited. From what I've heard, the best bet in Canada is probably the Kobo. I think it's powered by Chapters.

  8. Welcome back. I like the wider column and clean lines. True, a lot of other blogs are now using the book background. Whenever I'd land on one of them it would remind me of your blog and I'd come visit.

No e-reader for me yet. I'm still hauling around books. I can't decide on a format.

  9. Bermudaonion has made me one happy girl! I have a Sony Touch and an Ipad, I love both but I've been wanting to add a kindle to my collection. I see she has three readers as well...:)

In the dark I love reading on my Ipad. Outside, I love reading on my Sony Touch 650. I've heard great things about the Kobo as well. Kindle has a lot of great free books and reduced prices that don't always apply to other ebook stores.

  10. I love the wider blog! And what do you mean you marked all read? 1000+ posts would only take you like, what, 40, 50 hours to catch up! ;)

  11. Hello! Welcome back! I was so happy to see you were posting again! I hope your vacation from te blogworld was enjoyable. I think your new blog look is terrific. I, too, made a few minor changes to mine...and may make more & bigger changes. I just have to get up the nerve.

I am sorry but I cannot help you with the e-reader decision as I haven't made up my mind if I want to gotht way or not. I think it's awesome that Mr. B wants to get you one....buy the nicest one you can (heee, heee!) Do you think it will curb the print books that come into your home?!
I love the feel of paper books too much to every give them up so an e-reader would an extra way to read. Not a bad thing at all but I don't go out all that often or travel much so not sure if I relly need one.
Let us know which e-reader you get!

  12. I really like the new look, too! I hope you had a great blogging break. And I can't really give advice on the e-reader issue, as I don't have one, but my husband recently bought a used first-generation Kindle, and he loves it.

  13. I like the orange look … it goes really nicely with your header. I actually think the book background is a little busy.

And yay for the e-reader!! I personally have and love my Kindle but I think you need to check out all of them and see what grabs you the most.

  15. Sorry I've been absent so long, work has been insane.

I've had my Nook well over a year, and I LOVE it! I researched a long time (before there was a Nook!), and it had several features that helped me choose it over the Kindle - you can replace the battery (rather than needing to send book in for replacement); you can add additional memory; small color touch-screen shows book covers (handy) and has keyboard as needed; MP3 player allows you to listen to audio books, or music; ability to load borrowed library books (altho I think Kindle just added this feature very recently); and the biggest thing - I could actually go to a store and try one out - something you could not do with a Kindle at the time I was buying.

    Whatever you choose, enjoy!

  16. Thank you all for the friendly welcome-back messages and your thoughts on my new blog look and on e-readers! I'm leaning away from Kindle (I don't want to be stuck buying only from Amazon) and towards Sony at the moment, though I need to do a bit more research. And yes, Mr. B hopes that this gadget will reduce the number of books coming into the house, but I suspect that Kathy's right about the likelihood of that ever happening!
