Similar Covers: White Mask

Once again, I’ve spotted a familiar cover in LibraryThing’s latest batch of Early Reviewers books. This time it’s The Rape of the Muse by Michael Stein (2011), which I recognized because Stacked recently discussed a lookalike cover, Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey (2010). When I plugged these covers into TinEye, I found two more lookalikes: Simply Wicked by Lisa G. Riley (May 2008) and Brilliant Insanity by Yvonne Mason (July 2008).

I dislike all of these covers (I think that mask looks creepy), but if I had to pick one to read, I’d go with Guardian of the Dead. I also think it’s interesting that the mask is slightly different on each cover—and that three of the four covers use red fonts. What do you think? Do any of these covers appeal to you?

  1. I don't like them either. There's nothing exciting or original about them.

  2. I was looking at some of these today myself and wondering if the cover of ROBOPOCALYPSE uses the same mask but at a different angle. They all creep me out, regardless!

  3. I agree, Kathy, although if you check out the Stacked post, you'll see that Guardian of the Dead is now out in paperback with a new cover, and it's even worse (IMO)!

Gwendolyn, I knew there was another cover that was reminiscent of these! Thanks for mentioning it! I don't think it's the same mask, but the colour scheme is similar too (white, black, red).

  5. I can't see a mask like that without thinking of Phantom of the Opera (the musical). I don't think any of these covers would prompt me to check out the books.

  6. Ugly covers. And covers do make a difference in my initial attraction to a book... it's what gets me to read the blurb, or not.

I didn't like the cover of Robopocalypse either. It was only after I read a few early reviews that I decided I wanted to read and review it too. And it ended up being a pretty good book. But the cover alone would never have attracted me to it.

  7. They do all look creepy … and the color choices are all similar too.

  8. No, like you I find them quite spooky, especially the cover of Simply Wicked which sounds strange as they are all sooooo alike - I think it must be the slightly paler background that does it.

  11. I don't like the covers themselves but I think the mask is kind of cool.
