It captures very well the best of what fiction can do.

I'm a bit jealous that you got to meet her in person, Marie!

Brogan, I hate it when that happens -- it really pulls you out of an otherwise good story when characters behave in unbelievable ways (or what happens to them seems contrived). I think you'd enjoy this book!

Carrie, one of my questions for Joan will focus on how she figured out what would happen in a situation that occurs near the end of the book. (Sorry that's totally cryptic -- I'm trying to avoid spoilers!) I didn't know anything about the settlers before reading this book. And I haven't read any of the books she mentioned, but now I'm curious about them all!

Staci, me too!avisannschildhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12486477882148877317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2861558236080696007.post-26597603816627364212011-10-22T22:35:19.731-04:002011-10-22T22:35:19.731-04:00I absolutely loved this guest post and it brought ...I absolutely loved this guest post and it brought me even closer to understanding the way this author creates her magic!!!Stacihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07600979915661464945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2861558236080696007.post-28514130799561597132011-10-22T12:13:08.781-04:002011-10-22T12:13:08.781-04:00I loved reading this post, because I was wondering...I loved reading this post, because I was wondering about some of these issues as I read. I had honestly never heard of acts of violence on the part of the settlers, or even that there are radical elements in the Judaic religion - although it makes sense, since that seems to be the norm with any religion.

How great that she mentioned The Things We Carried - one of my favorite works of autobiographical fiction, and definitely a situation where the author got it right.Carrie K.http://booksandmovies.colvilleblogger.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2861558236080696007.post-49436336094982530242011-10-22T11:28:18.249-04:002011-10-22T11:28:18.249-04:00Sadly, that's how I feel ("No, it's n...Sadly, that's how I feel ("No, it's not like that.") about the first Tish Cohen novel I just read, Inside out girl...not about the main character, a girl with Nonverbal Learning Disability NLD, who is well done, but about another character, the teenage girl struggling with her sexual orientation, and about some plot points around some other characters.
