The Chevalier book is interesting too, but not as well crafted. While I suppose she was trying to replicate the language as it might have been spoken by someone of the lower classes (when speaking for Mary), I found it clunky and uncomfortable to read. Chevalier has disappointed me in the past so I hadn't seriously considered reading Remarkable Creature. I didn't like Chevlier's writing at all, and I found her portrayal of class just as problematic as you did. One of my favorite books as a kid was a picture book about Mary Anning, Dragon in the Rocks, so I was really hoping that Remarkable Creatures would be better than it was. I'm so glad you reviewed Curiosity. I'm definitely going to have to pick that up.Emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07389249065514335671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2861558236080696007.post-28362111954691192802012-03-23T12:09:04.527-04:002012-03-23T12:09:04.527-04:00Hi Brogan, I enjoyed reading your writeups about b...Hi Brogan, I enjoyed reading your writeups about both books, and given your conclusions, I'm glad I read Curiosity (which I loved) first as well! I haven't yet read the Chevalier, and had been thinking about it, but what you said about Mary being in need of constant rescue... that doesn't seem appealing or likely. I'm glad, though, that both have brought more attention to Mary and her achievements.Sarah Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13340312953393474963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2861558236080696007.post-49107610141156236022012-03-23T10:05:14.510-04:002012-03-23T10:05:14.510-04:00I have arrived at your blog re your comment on Dan...I have arrived at your blog re your comment on Danielle's A Work in Progress blog, and was curious to know more about Curiosity, the book about Mary Anning. Having read The Fossil Hunter by Shelley Emling and Jurassic Mary by Patricia Pierce, as well as Tracey Chevalier's book, I can't resist Curiosity. I live within about an hour's drive of Devon and Dorset's Jurassic Coast, where Mary lived. For years there were no books about her, now there are at least five, factual and fictional.
Another book about the life of a pioneering female fossil bunter is Discovering Dorothea (the Dorothea in question being Dorothea Bate) by Karolyn Shindler.
Margaret Pgalanthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14190356279359463949noreply@blogger.com
